Waterproofing of swimming pools


Nowadays the swimming pools have become increasingly popular and have entered in the daily life of many households. For many people the pool represents an opportunity to maintain good health and physical. The proper designed and executed with quality pool increases the quality of life and brings comfort, beauty and convenience in the home. However, in order for the pools to function properly and for many years, as well as not to create problems, the proper measures are necessary to be taken at the stage of their design and construction.

Usually the constructions of the swimming pools are made of so-called waterproofing concrete. Despite this, the requirements for concrete structures, the quality of the dilatation connections, the filling of the joins between the concrete panels, and also the microcracks, which are formed during the process of drying of the concrete, require an overall waterproofing of the structure of the pool, which will prevent the risk of water penetrating into the concrete surface. The reliable waterproofing of all adjacent to the pool facilities (bathrooms, showers, changing rooms) is also from a huge importance and it is necessary in order to maintain the long life of the facility and its smooth usage. Only after their full waterproof protection it can be proceded with the execution of the subsequent layers of coating.

Critical for waterproofing are the places around the drainage holes and the lighting bodies. Thee risk of water penetration in the angles between the walls and the bottom, as well as the repaired areas of the pools, is great. Highly active chemicals are used in order to clean the pool. Over time, these materials damage the joints and poorly protected areas and disrupt them, which is a precondition for water penetration between the tiles. The water creates significant pressure on the bottom and walls on the pool. When it is emptied, the weight of the surrounding earth mass plays and effect with opposite direction. These processes destroy the basic cement-based adhesives and grouts.

The waterproofing layer, which is laid under the tiles should have the following properties: - to provide effective waterproofing; - to be sufficiently flexible and elastic, especially at the bottom of the pool (the sun rays cause huge linear extensions when the pool is empty); - to be long lasting (the place where it is placed makes the future interventions difficult and expensive); - to make a strong bond with the base and to be resistant to negative water pressure (when the pools is empty, and there are temporary or permanent high groundwater); - to be resistant to chlorinated water, chlorine-ozone and other chemical substances used for cleaning and disinfection.

The waterproofing system HYDRO аnd SPLIT PROTECTION² covers completely all the requirements for waterproofing of pools. It forms an elastic seamless membrane with zero water absorption, which is firmly connected to the base and is extremely resistant even to negative water pressure, and in this way protects the pool from water leaking from both sides.

The tile adhesives that will be used in the pool and adjoining premises must have sufficient strength, water resist nce, high elasticity, as they will be exposed to continuous weather influence, to the influence of water in the pool, as well as to the containing in it chemical substances. The grouts must have a water repellent effect and provide protection against mold and mildew.

 

IMPLEMENTING THE SYSTEM:

Before applying the waterproofing layer the walls and the bottom of the pool are straightened and plastered with cement-sand mortar with defined dimensions of the sand (fraction1-8 mm for the bottom and fine fraction for the walls). To increase the adhesion of the coating before its application is performed priming with a contact and bonding primer TERACONTACT®. Wait for the complete drying of the plaster (5-7 days). The moisture of the concrete should not be more than 3%.

1. Applying the first layer of two-component waterproofing insulation HYDROZOL® with roller, brush or trowel.

2. Placing a SEALING TAPE in the first layer.

3. The second layer elastic two-component waterproofing insulation HYDROZOL® is applied 4 h perpendicular to the first.

4. Reinforcing the second layer with REINFORCEMENT FIBERGLASS MESH over the whole area (the strips have to overlap at least 10 cm) and applying the third layer of HYDROZOL® after 4 h. The total thickness of the three layers should be about 4 mm.

5. The tiles are bonded with super flexible adhesive TERAFLEX® PLATINIUM WHITE for elastic bonding of mosaic, glass and ceramic tiles on critical bases (4 days after the implementation of the waterproofing). The tiling is done in the following order: ends → walls → the bottom of the pool.

6. The grouting is done after the complete drying of the adhesive (48 h after the tiling is done) with an elastic aqua-static grout for swimming pools.

Applying waterproofing on the walls and floors around the pools (saunas, showers, changing rooms, etc.) is performed in the way described in the section on moist and wet premises. Each pool has its own peculiarities and requires the use of specific materials and techniques. For this purpose it is recommended that you consult with consultant before starting work.

6. REINFORCEMENT FIBERGLASS MESH (Alkali proof fibre glass mesh for producing an armed mortar coat in an thermal insulation system and retrofitting of cracks on facade surfaces)

8. TERAFLEX® PLATINIUM WHITE (White highly flexible, water and frost resistant adhesive for thin layer application of ceramic linings and granite tile floors (Granitogres™) over deformable and fine polished surfaces)

9. TERAFLEX® GOLD SELECTION (Elastic hydrophobic grout with sparkling (brocade) effect highly wear-resistant and protection against mould and mildew, for joints with 2 to 25 mm width)

or TERAFLEX® SILVER SELECTION (Elastic hydrophobic grout highly resistant to dirt and with protection against mould and mildew, for joints with 1 to 6 mm width)

10. TERAFLEX SANITARY SILVER SELECTION, sanitary silicone (Colorful, fast-hardening silicone, resistant to mould, mildew, moisture and UV-rays for wet and damp premises)
