Waterproofing of wall-bases and underground walls

The wall-base area of a facade starts from the elevation of the terrain or its surface and extends to a height of 30-50 cm. It is the area, which is subjected to the greatest water loading and exposed to rainwater, the melting snow and the water from irrigation facilities. Moreover, the wall-base is subjected to numerous mechanical loadings and occasional hits from traversing machines, parked cars, unintentional human impact, etc., which are able to damage the insulation and the plaster on it.

These processes in combination with the constant process of wetting and drying with time damage the integrity of the wall-base. The emerged disorders result in the penetration of water into the interior of the thermal insulation system and in the base under it. In the underground area the walls are also subjected to great water loading – from precipitations, ground water, irrigation, etc. When the waterproofing is incorrectly placed or damaged moisture penetrates the wall. The freezing of the penetrated water at low temperatures destroys over time the materials and reduces their thermal insulation properties. This leads to the destruction of the coatings and deposition of salts on the inner surfaces of the walls and favors the development of mold and mildew.

For this reason, when planning and installing the application of the waterproofing and thermal insulation systems is important to take under consideration the specific mechanical and water loadings in wall-base area and the underground walls.

System solutions HYDRO аnd SPLIT PROTECTION² are specially designed for waterproofing of these areas from the building and prevent the penetration of moisture in the construction, ensuring their reliable protection and long life.



1. The priming is performed over the entire surface in depth until the cut previous of the base with NANOGRUND® - Deeply penetrating primer with Nano particles, for optimal sealing and strengthening of the base and creating a better contact surface.

2. Applying the first layer of two-component waterproofing insulation HYDROZOL® with roller, brush or trowel.

3. The second layer elastic two-component waterproofing insulation HYDROZOL® is applied 4 h perpendicular to the first. The total thickness of the two layers should be 3 mm.

4. The thermal insulation boards are bonded with TERMOFLEX® ADHESIVE MORTAR FOR EPS/XPS (with fibres) (4 days after the implementation of the waterproofing). The adhesive is applied over the entire surface of the boards.

5. Dowelling of the wall-base boards is performed (at least 24 h after their bonding) on height at least 20 cm above the elevation of the terrain. It is not allowed drilling the waterproof layer with dowels!

6. The reinforced with FIBERGLASS MESH plaster is done with the help of TERMOFLEX® REINFORCING MORTAR FOR EPS & XPS in depth of 20-30 cm under the elevation of the terrain. Down the thermal insulation boards can remain not plastered.

7. In the underground part is placed waterproofing coat, which in its lower end is wrung out. The trench is filled with gravel with width 20-30 cm, and in the fundament of the base is led a drainage.

8. The tiling in the wall-base is performed with highly flexible adhesive TERAFLEX® GOLD (at least 7 days after the application of the plaster). The adhesive is mandatory placed over the entire surface of the base, as well as on the tile.

9. The joints between the tiles are grouted (48 h after the tiling) with an elastic grout TERAFLEX® SILVER SELECTION (for wide joints from 4 to 16 mm), which has a powerful antibacterial effect and is resistant to freezing. To prevent the collection of condensation in the adhesive under the tiles, the surface of the joints has to be at least 6% from the total tiling surface.

5. TERMOFLEX® EPS F-EXTRA (Facade thermal and noise insulation boards from EPS with increased pressure strength, for thermal insulation of buildings as an element of an integrated thermal insulation system)

and TERAPOR® XPS GRAPHITE (Thermal insulation boards from extruded polystyrene (XPS) no skin, with extremely high compressive strength for thermal insulation of places subjected to extreme mechanical and water loads)

6. TERMOFLEX® REINFORCING MORTAR FOR EPS & XPS (Construction reinforcing mortar for bonding and plastering thermo-insulation boards from expanded (EPS) and extruded (XPS) polystyrene when thermo insulating buildings)

7. FIBERGLASS MESH (Alkali proof fibre glass mesh for producing an armed mortar coat in an thermal insulation system and retrofitting of cracks on facade surfaces)

8. TERAFLEX® GOLD (High strength, flexible adhesive for thin and thick layer application of large and heavy lining tiles and stones on critical bases)

9. TERAFLEX® SILVER SELECTION (Elastic hydrophobic grout highly resistant to dirt and with protection against mould and mildew, for joints with 1 to 6 mm width)


11. TERMOFLEX® COLOUR PRIMER (Coloured steam permeable primer, which penetrates within the base and improves adhesion prior to plaster application and facade painting)
